How To Winter Proof Your Hair

We are now heading into the coldest months of winter. Winter can be very hard on your hair. The cold air is very drying and the constant need to keep it covered with a hat or wrapped in a scarf can cause static and knotting. So it’s important to take steps to protect your hair before heading out for the day.

Use a natural shampoo and conditioner. One that is chemical free. There are excellent essential oil based shampoos available. These oils protect your scalp and hair from winter’s effects, helping to stop strands from breaking and preventing split ends.

It’s crucial that when towel drying your hair, wether it’s short or long, to not be too rough with it.  Dry winter hair is prone to breakage. Gently wrap it in the towel, taking care that it’s not too tight. This will prevent breakage.

Once that’s done gently comb your hair with your fingers. Using a brush can be very harsh on wet hair.  If you must use a brush, use one like the Wet Brush. Those bristles are more gentle on your hair and scalp. Then let your hair air dry. If you must use a blowdryer, use it on the coolest setting. The heat is drying and can damage your hair.

Try not to use too much hair styling product on your hair during winter. Many have alcohol and other chemicals in their ingredients which are drying. If your hair tends to get knotty, put some argan oil on it, specifically at the ends. Argan oil is great at keeping the knots away, while at the same time nourishing your hair.

It doesn’t take any extra time, effort or money to keep your hair winter proof. Just a little extra thought. When spring comes along you will be glad to see that in this case, it really is the thought that counts.
